After a successful premiere at Sundance this year, “Weiner” has found foreign distribution rights through Dogwoof and NonStop Entertainment. The former will handle UK and foreign distribution, while the latter will be responsible for pan-Scandinavian rights. Domestic rights to the documentary will be handled by Showtime and Sundance Selects.
The documentary focuses on how the mayoral candidate fell from grace for the second time in a sexting scandal. As the former congressman tries to regain a semblance of public decency and political clout, the camera continues to roll as we watch an ambitious man’s dreams collapse around him thanks to the contemporary issues of media overexposure.
Directors Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg said in an official statement, “We are thrilled to be working with Dogwoof. They have a long history of supporting important documentaries and ensuring they reach the largest audience possible. We look forward to working with them on having our film be an important voice in the ongoing conversation about politics and media.”
“Weiner” will see a limited theatrical and VOD release on May 20 via Sundance Selects. Showtime will broadcast the documentary sometime in the fall.
