Seven years later, after an odyssey that tested their relationship as well as their filmmaking acumen, the result was a remarkable shot-for-shot replica—except for the airplane fight sequence in the North African desert. (Last year, VICE’s series “American Obsessions,” which unearths stories of the strange cultural phenomena that capture the public imagination, featured an 11-minute short about Zala and Strompolos, including the campaign, thirty years after “Raiders” first appeared in theaters, to shoot the airplane scene. Watch the video below.)
Now, Drafthouse Films has acquired the worldwide rights to Jeremy
Coon and Tim Skousen’s “Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made,” a documentary about their lifelong journey—joined by another friend, Jayson Lamb—to complete their passion
project. “Raiders!,” which has
been screened at SXSW, DOC
NYC, and Fantasia International Film Festival, also features interviews with John Rhys Davies and Eli Roth, among others.
“Raiders!” will receive a limited theatrical release across North America in the summer of 2016, as well as distribution via a variety of VOD and digital platforms, with a Blu-ray/DVD to
follow later in the year. The film is a
production of Jeremy Coon Productions, and was produced by Coon and Skousen.
Kyle Newman executive produced.
