Exclusive: Independent Film Vet Ryan Krivoshey Launches New Distribution Company

Independent film mainstay Ryan Krivoshey, previously of boutique distribution outfit The Cinema Guild, has announced the launch of his Grasshopper Film, a new distribution company “dedicated to the release of acclaimed and award-winning independent cinema.” Grasshopper will focus on domestic releases, and founder Krivoshey and company are aiming to release 8-12 titles theatrically and over 50 titles on VOD, home video and otherwise non-theatrically each year.

Grasshopper is very invested in the non-theatrical market, and expects to promote its slate with screenings, filmmaker talks and community events. Later this year, Grasshopper will also launch a home video label “presenting a curated selection of titles in deluxe Blu-ray and DVD editions.”

The distributor has already lined up the first film of what should be a very exciting new slate, and will release Asghar Farhadi’s 2006 drama “Fireworks Wednesday,” which has not previously been released in the U.S., as its first title. The film will open on March 16 in New York City, with a national release to follow.

Grasshopper has also begun filling out the rest of its 2016 schedule and promises to release both new and older works from filmmakers like Pedro Costa, Lav Diaz, Lisandro Alonso, Matt Porterfield, Thom Andersen, Joaquim Pinto and Jose Luis Guerin during the year.

“This is a great time for independent film,” said Krivoshey. “In recent years, an incredible community has developed, from funding to festival to art-house, that fosters and supports audacious filmmaking in all forms, whether narrative or documentary or something in between. At Grasshopper, we look forward to being part of this community-at-large, to champion works we believe in, and expose them to audiences around the country.”

The distributor expects to make further announcements in the coming days of new acquisitions out of Berlin.
