‘I Gotta Be Me’ Blends Genres in the World of Rat Pack Tribute Acts

'I Gotta Be Me' Blends Genres in the World of Rat Pack Tribute Acts

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

I Gotta Be Me

Logline: It’s Benidorm meets Spinal Tap – The unbelievable ‘real’ story of a Rat Pack tribute show.

Elevator Pitch:
Fed up of only playing cab drivers and terrorists on TV, a British-Indian actor joins a group of ex-pats to perform as his hero, Sammy Davis Jr, in a Rat Pack tribute show touring the amphitheatres of Cyprus. Paul Shah hopes the exposure will open new doors for his career, but his fellow performers just want to have some swinging fun in the sunshine! It’s a comedy about celebrity and what it means to be “successful,” combining real people with a fictional storyline. It’s a playful look at problems facing BAME actors today, and a tribute to The Rat Pack.

Production Team:
Narration by Steve McFadden (“Eastenders”)
Paul Shah – Phlaudt Sharma (“Eastenders,” “Gravity,” “Children of Men,” “The Office,” “Gavin and Stacey”)

Executive Producers – Phaldut Sharma, Steven Bloomer
Director, Editor, Sound Mix – Steven Bloomer
Grading – Jax Harney
Camera – Vlad Jakovlev, Igor Nikitenkov

About the Film:
Phaldut went to Cyprus in 2011, picked up a camcorder and began capturing this world. He brought it to me and I fell in love with it: HP sauce and high-hats, suntans and swing! The combination of The Rat Pack (great soundtrack!), the semi-pro performers and the anxieties of a minor celebrity – these three worlds create a fascinating dialogue about what it means to be ‘successful,’ which really resonated with me. For Phaldut, the series was a chance to playfully explore issues with representation of BAME actors on screen today, but put into the context of Sammy Davis, Jr.

Current Status: The whole series is shot. Episodes 1-3 are out & 4-6 are available to our backers. Currently fundraising to complete the story in Episodes 6-10.
