With the electronic pulse familiar from “The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” and “Gone Girl” (all composed with Trent Reznor) heightened nearly to the breaking point, the new EP has us even more excited for “Triple 9” (Open Road, February 26).
The hands-on Hillcoat “had a particular vision for the music on
this movie, which was raw sounding electronics accompanied by, bizarrely, a
saxophone,” according to Ross. “John wanted to avoid ‘sophistication’ and capture the excitement of
hands-on performances with noisy, broken machines.” The collaborators succeeded: the first track, the cleverly titled “Ticking Glock,” is intense enough to rouse you from even the deepest mid-afternoon malaise. The EP, co-created with Bobby Krlic, Leopold Ross, and Claudia Sarne, also features Ross’ remix of Cypress Hill’s 1991 ‘PIGS.’ All of Ross’ profits from the song will be donated to the National Urban League.
Hillcoat’s follow-up to “The Proposition,” “The Road,” and “Lawless,” “Triple 9,” which is already receiving decidedly mixed reviews from critics, stars Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet (as Russian mobster, Irina Vlaslov, which is an enticement in itself). The film follows a group of criminals and corrupt police officers drawn into a risky heist while being blackmailed by the Russian Mafia. Watch the trailer below.
