With the advent and ubiquity of YouTube, it’s only natural that it would become the world’s go-to platform to showcase, watch and share videos. And that sense of camaraderie and fandom has transferred over to the movie world, where trailers for films typically end up being some of the highest viewed videos on the website — even the Internet.
“Most internet platforms feature marketing as interruption, while YouTube remains a platform of engagement for advertisers promoting content. It is still, by far, the go-to destination for people who want to find the latest movie trailers,” said Rob Davis, Executive Director of Social and Content at Ogilvy in a statement.
YouTube, determined to discover what films its viewership is most excited about this awards season, has gone out of its way to rank the least-to-most viewed trailers for this year’s eight Best Picture nominees, creating the YouTube Movie Trailers Leaderboard for the 2016 Oscars. The leaderboard complies viewcounts for trailers across multiple YouTube postings, including studio channels and aggregators.
Taking home the big prize was “The Revenant,” which has recently become the strongest contender for Best Picture, and deservedly Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Following Alejandro González Iñárritu’s critically acclaimed film was the supremely gorgeous “Mad Max: Fury Road” and the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi film “The Martian.”
