This past week has been a busy one for Oscar nominees. A jubilant luncheon brought some 150 nominees together for a group photo. The DGA awards happened. The WGA awards were anticipated. Ditto the BAFTAs. Oh, and today? Oscar ballots have landed.
Needless to say, it’s a hectic time, which doesn’t make this year’s winners any easier to predict. With “The Revenant,” “The Big Short” and “Spotlight” all in contention for a number of big prizes, prognosticators don’t know quite where to turn. That’s the focus of this week’s episode of Screen Talk, in which Anne Thompson tells Eric Kohn about her experiences at the luncheon and ponders some of the more confusing categories, including best picture. Could “Room” wind up with enough second place votes to quietly make its way to frontrunner status? Stranger things have happened.
