Watch: Ethan Hawke Resurrects a Jazz Icon in 'Born to Be Blue' Trailer

This spring, two of the most reliable actors in the business are resurrecting two icons of jazz music in two unconventional dramas that are not your typical biopics. Don Cheadle will be taking the reins as Miles Davis in “Miles Ahead” in April, but just a week before, Ethan Hawke will bring Chet Baker to the big screen in Robert Budreau’s “Born to Be Blue.” The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and co-stars Carmen Ejogo and Callum Keith Rennie.

The official synopsis reads: “In the 1950s, Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of heroin addiction. In his innovative anti-biopic, director Robert Budreau zeroes in on Baker’s life at a key moment in the 1960s, just as the musician attempts to stage a hard-fought comeback, spurred in part by a passionate romance with a new flame (Ejogo).”

Mixing fact and fiction, as well as different cinematic styles, “Born to Be Blue” looks to be as creative and improvisatory as jazz itself. IFC Films will release the drama in theaters on March 25 and on VOD starting March 31.
