Taika Waititi has previously shown off his smart comedic chops in films like “Boy” and “What We do in the Shadows,” and it looks like all the qualities fans of his love most are front and center in his latest comedy-adventure, “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” Based on a tale by the prolific novelist Barry Crump, the film was one of the biggest crowdpleasers at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it was picked by The Orchard for U.S. distribution.
Starring newcomer Julian Dennison as a “very bad egg” named Ricky, the movie follows the defiant young child’s adventure with his grumpy foster uncle (played by Sam Neill) in the wild New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues to find them, and the two are forced to put aside their differences and work together in order to survive.
While The Orchard hasn’t given the film an official release date, “Wilderpeople” is gearing up for release in its home country at the end of the month, and the international official trailer has just dropped in anticipation. Featuring Waititi’s sharp sense of comedy and family, the movie should capitalize on its Sundance buzz and be a decent-sized hit when it finally makes it stateside. Watch the trailer above.
