“Everything we know will collapse” are words we hear early in the trailer for the new Hulu original series “The Path,” and if this new spot is anything to go by, that could turn out to be quite a promise indeed. Playwright Jessica Goldberg’s new 10-episode series has been slowly generating buzz on the basis of its terrific cast and beguiling premise, and as luck would have it, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out if the gamble was worth it. A new trailer for “The Path” is here and it’s as moody, creepy and awesome as you’d expect it to be.
Starring Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, Hugh Dancy and Rockmond Dunbar, “The Path” takes a look at a very dangerous cult and how it affects the lives of a few lost souls looking for answers. The trailer is full of grotesque, eye-popping imagery – Bloody burials in the woods! Pythons slithering in hospital beds! – and the star power of its cast alone will be reason enough for many viewers to tune in. Paul in particular is well-suited to this kind of tortured, intense character, and it’s nice to see Monaghan doing something on the small screen beyond reacting to Woody Harrelson’s bad behavior. Dancy was so perfect as Hannibal Lecter’s frenemy Will Graham on NBC’s great “Hannibal” that it’s hard for me to see him in anything else, but the role of a charismatic, controlling cult leader seems perfectly suited to the actor’s peculiar gifts. The show also seems to have elements of HBO’s supernatural drama “The Leftovers,” which also tackled cults in the form of the fictional Guilty Remnant, but “The Path” looks to be less impenetrable and more of a classic horror show than Damon Lindelof’s divisive spiritual parable. Here’s the official synopsis:
“The Path” follows a family at the center of a controversial cult movement as they struggle with relationships, faith, and power. Each episode takes an in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want. The series blends elements of mystery-thriller, romance, and mysticism.
