Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are in the thick of awards season this year for their performances in “Steve Jobs” and “The Danish Girl,” respectively, with the latter expected to win her first Oscar on Sunday night. But if the new stunning trailer for this year’s “The Light Between Oceans” is any indication, both acting heavyweights could very well find themselves back in contention next year. The drama, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by M. L. Stedman, is the latest from Derek Cianfrance, who has proved how effectively he can handle marital dramas in efforts like “Blue Valentine.”
The drama stars Fassbender and Vikander as a lighthouse keeper and his wife. The pair live in isolation out at the edge of the sea, but their lives are forever changed when they discover a child washed ashore on a lifeboat and decide to raise her as their own. Years later, the two encounter a grieving stranger (Rachel Weisz) who is actually the child’s biological mother, and thus begins a wrenching drama of marriage and motherhood.
Pairing Fassbender and Vikander together at this point in their careers is simply a gift for cinephiles, but the trailer also shows off the delicate touches of both Cianfrance and “Macbeth” cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, who seem to be taking advantage of the gorgeous scenic landscapes and the closeup-ready talents of their stars. Disney has set a September 2 release date for the drama.
