WGN America Releases 'Underground' Key Poster Art & Music Featurette Featuring John Legend, Raphael Saadiq

UPDATE: Today, WGN has released key poster art (above) and a new featurette (below) – “The Music of ‘Underground’” – which goes behind-the-scenes with executive producer John Legend, and composers Laura Karpman and Raphael Saadiq, as they discuss the musical choices they made for the series, including the main title theme “Heaven’s Door,” which was produced by Legend, written by Angelique Cinelu and Curtis Richardson, and performed by Alice Smith.

In the new video below, which will also premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week – the “Underground” cast and executive producers explain the show’s different take on a very familiar part of American history – slavery – promising more of a thrill-ride, as men and women struggle to escape an oppressive system, risking their lives in the process.”

WGN has released 2 new teasers for its upcoming Underground Railroad escape thriller, “Underground,” which premieres on Wednesday, March 9. Both feature the series’ stars, Aldis Hodge and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as their individual characters: Hodge is Noah, who is described as a brave, driven and insanely clever field slave, who organizes a small group of fellow slaves, with the goal of escaping to the Underground Railroad and to freedom; Smollett-Bell is Rosalee, who is described as a shy house slave with a powerful inner strength and courage. UPDATE: WGN has released the opening title sequence for its Underground Railroad escape thriller, titled “Underground,” which premieres on Wednesday, March 9. Watch the main title sequence below, and catch up on past updates underneath, including 2 trailers. WGN America also announced that it will air the series premiere commercial free, at its Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour event today.

WGN America announced today that “Underground,” the

highly-anticipated original series, will premiere Wednesday, March 9. 

The network also revealed

the first two trailers in support of the escape thriller, a series that takes viewers on a pulse-pounding journey with revolutionaries of the Underground Railroad. 

From creators and executive

producers Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, and executive producer and Academy Award-winner

John Legend, the 10-episode, hour-long program stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Aldis Hodge, and

follows a group of courageous men and women who use their ingenuity, power and perseverance to

attempt the greatest escape in history and break free, despite the dire consequences that awaited

them on the other side. A courageous blacksmith Noah (Aldis Hodge) covertly organizes

a small group of his fellow slaves and pieces together a daring plan of escape across hundreds of

miles to freedom. The odds of success are razor-thin for those who make it off the plantation, while

the risks, dangers and obstacles multiply each step of the way.

“Underground” is created by Misha Green (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Heroes”) and Joe Pokaski

(“Daredevil,” “Heroes”) who executive produce alongside Akiva

Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind,” “I Am Legend”) of Weed Road Pictures; and Joby Harold (“King

Arthur,” “Edge of Tomorrow”) and Tory Tunnell (“King Arthur,” “Holy Rollers”) of Safehouse


John Legend and his Get Lifted partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius executive

produce. Additionally, Get Lifted oversees all elements of the show’s music. 

Anthony Hemingway

(“The Wire,” “Treme”) directs and serves as executive producer for the first four episodes.

“Underground” is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Tribune.

Prior to the premiere of “Underground,” WGN America will launch its newest original drama

“Outsiders” on Tuesday, January 26. Additionally, the second season finale of the network’s Emmy

Award-winning series “Manhattan” will air Tuesday, December 15.
