Bennett Miller and Annapurna are Reuniting for 'A Christmas Carol'

Bennett Miller has made an acclaimed career out of dissecting masculine obsession. His four features to date all center around men hungry to achieve their own professional power and to leave a lasting legacy carved out of their own self-image, be it the motormouthed tour guide in the documentary “The Cruise” or the manipulative Truman Capote in “Capote.” According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter last night, Miller is gearing up to reunite with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures (the team behind “Foxcatcher”) for a new adaption of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” and while that might initially seem like an odd choice for the dark and icy auteur, Ebenezer Scrooge is perhaps the most identifiable Miller character one could find in literature.

Dickens’ tale about a money-obsessed business magnate and his journey of self-discovery on Christmas Eve somehow fits into the Miller cinematic landscape if you think about it. The only thing up for debate is the story’s happy ending, for almost all of Miller’s movies end with heavy, brooding confliction. The story has been adapted countless times, most recently by Robert Zemeckis for a 2010 stop-motion version, but clearly Miller’s take will not be the family-friendly version audiences have come to expect. We’re thinking what the revisionist and personal “Noah” was to Darren Aronofsky, “A Christmas Carol” will be for Miller.

THR reports that the script is being written by Oscar-winning “Shakespeare in Love” scribe Tom Stoppard. Ellison will produce alongside Scott Rudin, Jennifer Fox and Miller. No casting or release info has been given at this time, and the project seems to be in the earliest stages of development, but consider us surprisingly intrigued by what Miller could end up doing with this widely known story.
