Dennis Lehane Reviews 'The French Connection' on Trailers from Hell

On this week’s Trailers from Hell, Boston novelist Dennis Lehane ("Gone Baby Gone," "Mystic River") narrates the trailer to William Friedkin’s visceral New York actioner "The French Connection," which won five Oscars including Best Picture.

Based on the exploits of NYPD detective Eddie Egan, who envisioned himself being played by Rod Taylor, the movie gave Gene Hackman his breakthrough role. The Department, annoyed by screenwriter Ernest Tidyman’s portrayal of the force, canned Egan seven hours before he was to sign his retirement papers!

Lehane sees Egan as driven by anger to bring down rich criminals living the high life.
