Naomi Watts & Jessica Lange To Star In Gia Coppola's 'The Secret Life Of The Lonely Doll'

With Francis Ford Coppola already cementing his status as one of the great American filmmakers, Sofia Coppola making her mark as one of the most distinctive independent filmmakers at the moment, and Roman Coppola flexing his muscles as writer, producer, and director, Gia Coppola has had a high bar to reach when it comes to the family trade. But she impressed many with her feature debut, “Palo Alto,” and now she’s getting ready for her second full length film, with some big names in tow.

Naomi Watts and Jessica Lange will star in “The Secret Life Of The Lonely Doll.” Based on the novel by Jean Nathan, it tells the story of Dare Wright, whose best-selling children’s book, “The Lonely Doll,” made her a household name in the 1950’s. Forty years later, the author/journalist, in her search for the out-of-print book series, found Wright living in a public hospital in Queens, New York. Nathan’s book pieces together Wright’s bizarre life of glamour and isolation, and her struggle to escape her painful childhood through her art.

That sounds like a pair of great roles for the lead actresses, and they’ll have a script from Merritt Johnson (“In Treatment,” “Temple Grandin“) to work with. No word yet on when production will begin, but it will have to wait for Lange to finish her Broadway run of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” which starts next month.
