'Rocketman' Explains How a Determined Citizen Built a Spacecraft in His Garage

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Logline: How did a dyslexic 9th grade dropout become the Wright Brothers of civilian spaceflight? Rocketman tells the story of Ky Michaelson, the first civilian to launch a rocket into space.

Elevator Pitch:
Ky “Rocketman” Michaelson fought the government, gravity and dyslexia in his historic quest for space. “Rocketman” is the documentary that will tell his story. A Hollywood stunt king and drag-racing legend with a savant-level skill for engineering, Michaelson has dedicated his life to pioneering space exploration, all from his own backyard.

Production Team:

Collette Sandstedt is the director and producer of Rocketman. She is a science documentary filmmaker, and her work with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution can be seen in 3D productions, IMAX films and museums nationwide. She’s produced and directed an underwater short film about Titanic for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and has created programming for the History Channel, Discovery Network, National Geographic and Red Bull Media. She is also a graduate of UC Berkeley and the American Film Institute – and a giant space geek.

Matthew Blute: Cinematographer
Vasco Lucas Nunes: Cinematographer
Syd Garon & Chris Kirk: Animators and GFK
Nyles Lannon: Composer
Brad Grossman: Editor

About the Film:
This movie’s for the garage inventors, the science geeks, the daredevil on her dirt bike, the guy or girl who was called stupid – for anyone who’s ever looked at the stars and dreamed of space. We’re here because:

We want the creative freedom to tell this story the right way
We want to to make Ky’s story as big as it deserves to be
We want to make this film with the people that it is for
We want to inspire the next generation of kids like Ky

Current Status: We’re raising $68,537 to film interviews with Ky’s rocket buddies, friends, nemeses, Hollywood celebrities and space luminaries.
