While critical consensus has declared that “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” is a blockbuster force of dour tedium, the impression thus far has been that “Suicide Squad” will be the film’s polar opposite —loose, fun and exciting with some unexpected surprises waiting within. But it seems that’s not the case.
According to Birth Movies Death, the “Bohemian Rhapsody” scored trailer that everyone flipped for isn’t indicative of David Ayer‘s movie at all, and according to a source, “Every joke in the movie is in that trailer.” So perhaps in light of how ‘Dawn Of Justice’ was going to be received, reshoots are now underway on the Paramount lot to the tune of “tens of millions of dollars.” Why? Warner Bros. wants more humor and a lighter touch, and given the response to ‘Dawn Of Justice,’ that’s hardly a surprise.
Reshoots are common practice on blockbusters, but this kind of reported spending is rare. And while it’s good that WB is recognizing the problem with the overly serious tone of the DC Films franchise so far, one wonders if a patchwork fix a few months before the film’s release will help the finished product, or if it will only make “Suicide Squad” veer unevenly between moods. It’s one thing to conceive a movie with a certain aesthetic in mind, but to then go back and try and reconfigure it as something else? Well, it’s not impossible, but we’ll see how it turns out.
Let us know what you think below. “Suicide Squad” opens on August 5th.
