If J.J. Abrams and Matt Damon felt a little blue on Oscar night when they went away empty-handed, they got a belated consolation prize at the Jameson Empire Awards presented by Jameson Whiskey and Empire Magazine in London Sunday night. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took home the most awards, five, including Best Director. Director Paul Greengrass, who has recently reunited with Damon on the upcoming “Jason Bourne” sequel, gave Damon the Jameson Best Actor award for “The Martian,” while Best Actress went to Oscar-winning supporting actress Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl.”
Hosted by David Walliams, these awards reflect a UK-friendly and populist sensibility. See the full list of winners below.
“The Force Awakens” took Best Visual Effects, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy (collected by Anthony Daniels as C-3PO), and Best Male and Female Newcomer awards to John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, who accepted their trophies.
Three honorary awards were bestowed by Empire Magazine: Winning the Empire Legend Award, posthumously, was the late Alan Rickman. Shane Meadows presented British actor-director Paddy Considine with the Empire Inspiration award and Miranda Richardson, currently filming “Churchill” with American character actor Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games” and “Spotlight”) presented him with the Empire Hero award.
Best British Film and Best Thriller went to “Spectre” (accepted by director Sam Mendes) and Best Film was “The Revenant.” Best Horror went to “The Hallow” and Best Comedy to “Spy.”
Best TV Series, presented this year for the first time, went to “This Is England ’90,” collected by Series director and co-writer Shane Meadows and cast members Thomas Turgoose, Jo Hartley and Chanel Cresswell.
Besides Vikander, Oscar-winners taking home more awards included “Inside Out” for Best Animation, “Amy” for Best Documentary, “The Big Short” for Best Screenplay, while unlike the Oscars “World Of Tomorrow won Best Short Film. “Mad Max: Fury Road” also triumphed in the newly introduced craft categories, taking four awards in total for Best Soundtrack; Best Costume Design; Best Make-Up And Hairstyling; and Best Production Design.
