On April 8 in New York City, Variety will host its 2016 Power of Women event which will honor five women who have been selected as “Lifetime Impact Honorees.” Variety has picked Misty Copeland, Megyn Kelly, Lupita Nyong’o, Julianne Moore and Vera Wang for the honor, based on their humanitarian efforts. The event corresponds with the yearly New York Women’s Impact Report, which profiles impactful women in the entertainment and media industries. The luncheon event will be hosted by Billy Eichner.
The honorees include the first African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland, for her work with Project Plié, an ABT initiative to increase racial and ethic representation in American ballet. The second honoree is Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly for her involvement in ChildHelp, a nonprofit that supports victims of child abuse.
The next honoree is Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o for her work with Mother Health International, a nonprofit that helps pregnant women and children in areas of disaster, war and poverty. Another Oscar-winning actress, Julianne Moore, is being recognized for her involvement with Everytown for Gun Safety, a nationwide movement for reform to end gun violence. The last honoree is fashion designer Vera Wang for her work with the Youth Anxiety Center, which offers treatments and counseling for children and teenagers with anxiety.
“We are honored to provide a platform that celebrates the outstanding women in entertainment who support and promote philanthropic causes making the world a better place to live,” said Group Publisher of Variety Michelle Sobrino Stearns. “Variety’s Power of Women NY is now in its third year in the city and we are excited that once again Lifetime will be joining Variety to fete those individuals who inspire us all to go beyond ourselves.”
Be sure to look out for honorees, who will be featured on the front cover of the New York Women’s Issue on April 5.
