Watch: A Cult Classic Finally Gets Its Ending in 'Beaver Trilogy: Part IV' Trailer

Underground movies just aren’t the same as they used to be. What used to be passed off from VHS to VHS, each copy adding its own unique mark on the already weathered tape, is now shared and re-shared all over the internet in a flash. And just like that, with a click of a button, the entire world has complete access to it.

Once upon a time, in an abandoned parking lot, director Trent Harris found a bizarre, eccentric, but fun-loving guy, who he named Groovin’ Gary. After following the young man for quite some time, Harris had enough material to make a strange and quirky documentary about the happy-go-lucky Midwesterner. After making the film, the director had decided to remake the documentary, not once, but twice. The first featured a young and undiscovered Sean Penn playing the easygoing fellow, while Crispin Glover played Groovin’ Gary in the next remake, the three of which combined to make “The Beaver Trilogy.”

But the film doesn’t have a real ending, instead focusing on how the main character’s verisimilitude of cheeriness is on the verge of melting away. So whatever happened to Groovin’ Gary? That’s exactly what director Brad Besser wants to find out in his second directorial effort, going to extreme lengths to find out just what happened to the troubled “dude.”

“Trent Harris’ underground film, ‘Beaver Trilogy’ remains to this day one of my favorite movies of all time,” said director Besser. “I wanted to make a film that would explore Trent’s path as a filmmaker, his unique style and collaboration with high profile film stars and most importantly I wanted to find the elusive Groovin’ Gary featured in the original film who, to date, has been a mystery to film fans for the past 35 years.”
