Following a successful awards run and the critical acclaim received for “The Witch,” A24 is doing anything but slowing down. This time, the studio is partnering with DirecTV on the release of “The Adderall Diaries,” the James Franco-led production to be unveiled this week exclusively to DirecTV customers. A theatrical release will follow closely in April.
Stephen Elliot, played by Franco, was once a successful writer with a best-selling novel. However, once he becomes fully weakened by his writer’s block and escalating dependency on Adderall, he becomes engrossed in a murder case to distract himself from his own life. Along the way, he meets Lana Edmond (Amber Heard), a reporter who offers him a unique perspective on the case. As their relationship continues, in comes his father, played by Ed Harris, who brings him back to earth and challenges the accuracy of his novel. While Stephen digs deeper into the murder case and reunites with his father, he is forced to recognize the truth between the cracks of his memory. Ultimately, it leads him to understand his own history and face the future before him. The cast also includes Cynthia Nixon and Christian Slater.
Written and directed by Pamela Romanowsky, her first feature is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Stephen Elliot, which chronicles how an author’s obsession with a high-profile murder case forces him to simultaneously tackle his tormented past. Meanwhile, in the present, comes a romance that could change his life forever.
“The Adderall Diaries” will be available to DirecTV customers on March 10, and will be available in theaters on April 15. Watch the trailer above.
