Jesse Eisenberg may have already gone great guns on a big bad role this year, thanks to his turn as Lex Luthor in the box office juggernaut “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but the Oscar nominee has another unsavory character up his sleeve. Although Joachim Trier’s “Louder Than Bombs” isn’t very concerned with labels (especially of the sort that apply to morality and doing the “right” thing), Eisenberg’s turn as Jonah is the closest the film comes to having a villain, and he pulls the part off with unnerving skill.
In the new film – Trier’s first venture into English-language filmmaking – a family reels from the still-recent death of their matriarch (played in flashbacks by Isabelle Huppert) in very different ways. While Gabriel Bryne’s Gene tries to move on, his youngest son (played by a breakout Devin Druid) ratchets up increasingly odd behavior, while Eisenberg’s Jonah tries to keep a handle on everyone’s emotions (even if his are dominated by some huge secrets).
Get a taste of the kind of questionable behavior Jonah dabbles in with icky ease in our exclusive clip up above.
