Playing in an ensemble orchestra can sometimes be difficult and cumbersome, especially as egos flair and competition grows. But for world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, this wasn’t a hinderance. It was an inspiration.
Scouring the Earth for the greatest musicians he could find, Ma took it upon himself to not dilute the flavor of each of the eclectic ensemble’s richly talented members, thus opening the world up to an original and deeply diverse fusion that the world had hardly – if ever – seen before. In Morgan Neville’s (“20 Feet from Stardom”) newest documentary, “The Music of Strangers,” the acclaimed director seeks to expose the extraordinary story of the 15-year journey that the internationally lauded musical collective has undergone, exploring music’s innate ability to highlight tradition, alter cultural progressions and inspire hope.
“The Music of Strangers” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, but you can catch it again come June 10 courtesy of The Orchard and HBO. Check out the trailer above before seeing the flick for yourself.
