Ricky Gervais has seen nothing but success when getting his own original series on Netflix, and now he’s hoping his hot streak will continue with a new feature film. After Emmy nominations for “Derek” and a certainly profitable deal for streaming both versions of “The Office” — plus a guest voice role on “BoJack Horseman” — Gervais is transitioning his films to the streaming giant as well, starting with “Special Correspondents.”

The upcoming feature focuses on a pair of New York-based radio journalists who pretend to be broadcasting from third-world countries while actually living safely within the walls of their Queens apartment. When they’re reported missing, the duo must figure out how to save their jobs and reputations or face prison time for their lies.

Due to Gervais’ longstanding appeal with the Emmys (and the Golden Globes), “Special Correspondents” has been eyed as a contender in the TV Movie fields. The trailer certainly promises plenty of intrigue, and the cast is made up of proven talents (like Farmiga and Bana) who are playing a bit outside their comfort zones. Comedies are always a tough sell during awards season, but Gervais’ appeal — and a Netflix push — could certainly make this one a player.

“Special Correspondents” premieres April 29 exclusively on Netflix. Check out the first trailer above and some first look images, as well as the poster, below.
