It’s hard to believe that the Webby Awards has already been around for twenty years, but the annual event is kicking off its third decade in style.
The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS) announced the nominees for the 20th anniversary presentation of the Webby Awards, highlighting the individuals, programs and movements that defined the digital space over the past year.
Those nominees that will have the chance to deliver one of the show’s enforced five-word acceptance speeches include talk show hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres and the minds behind 2015 viral video hits like “Dennis Quaid’s On-Set Freak Out” and the “Billy on the Street” segment with First Lady Michelle Obama.
Other media highlights among the nominees include the teams behind the “Game of Thrones” social media effort, the “Saturday Night Live” mobile app and the phenomenal Gimlet Media podcast Reply All. Rare is the show that have the New Yorker, the NHL, the Latin Grammys and National Corndog Day all exist in the same breath, but such is the appeal of the Webbys.
The Webby Awards hardware (software? freeware?) will be passed out on the evening of May 16, with the entire ceremony available for on-demand viewing the following morning.
