Comic book maestro and Marvel mainstay Stan Lee is about to see another of his characters hit the big screen, thanks to a newly announced live-action version of his animated superhero property, “Chakra: The Invincible.” Variety reports Graphic India and Lee’s POW! Entertainment have teamed up with Phantom Films to kick off pre-production on a Bollywood theatrical version of Lee’s character, originally launched as a comic book superhero in 2011 before getting the animated movie treatment in 2013 with a series of TV films that aired on Cartoon Network India.
Chakra is Lee’s first Indian superhero, and the new feature will mark Lee’s first foray into Bollywood entertainment.
The new film also comes complete with one hell of a pedigree, as it will be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, who made his debut with the Cannes selection “Udaan.” Motwane is currently working on the film’s screenplay with Lee and Graphic’s Sharad Devarajan.
The live-action film will reportedly update Lee’s original story – which centered on Raju Raj, a young tech genius from Mumbai who takes up the mantle of superhero after his mentor Dr. Singh invents a suit that weaponizes the body’s various chakras – to see Raju as a twenty-something battling baddies in present-day India.
In an official statement, Lee said, “I’m a fan of Bollywood films and am really excited about launching ‘Chakra the Invincible’ as my first Bollywood superhero movie. Vikramaditya is an amazingly talented filmmaker who I have no doubt can make the ‘Chakra’ film a massive hit in India and around the world. I only hope he remembers to include my cameo!”
