Logline: A 12 week, 6,000 km journey from Germany to Turkey, retracing the route of the refugee crisis.
Sosou is a 27-year-old from Aleppo, Syria, who fled from the horror and destruction of the Syrian Civil War. Although she and her family are safely resettled in Germany, she is haunted by the memories of death and the dangerous journey to escape.
The filmmaker will cycle Sosou’s route backwards, 6,000 km in 12 weeks, retracing her path. Through the voices of other refugees, locals, and fellow travelers, “Facing East” will explore the complex issue of migration and borders. A feature length documentary and interactive website, “Facing East” will explore the complex history of immigration in Europe and the Middle East.

About the Film:
The Refugee crisis has become one of the most contested issues in Europe and the world. From political campaigns to controversial deals, this crisis has had an immeasurable effect. As a global community we cannot cry ignorance or ill-knowledge, we’ve seen the terrifying images. Yet our reaction is slow-moving at best and a betrayal of our humanitarian ideals at worst. As borders close and countries struggle to either accommodate refugees or refuse them entrance, the future and how we confront international crisis’ is being shaped by our choices today. As filmmakers, we’ve decided to help the way we know best.
Current Status: We’re fundraising, currently at the beginning of a Kickstarter campaign.
