When he isn’t playing in 30 Seconds to Mars or sending his “Suicide Squad” co-stars disgusting presents, Jared Leto keeps busy by producing documentaries about cults. “Holy Hell,” directed by Will Allen, tells of the filmmaker’s time with the Buddhafield, a Los Angeles–based “spiritual group” he joined in the 1980s. The film has just premiered its first trailer, which you can watch above.
In it, former members of the Buddhafield speak of their experiences as archival footage shows what they’re talking about — Allen, a recent film-school grad, was allowed to extensively document the group’s activities. As tends to be the case, they were led by a mysterious, charismatic figure who told his followers the Buddhafield was in fact “an anti-cult” that defied the labels outsiders so often apply to movements of its kind. “It’s not like we were forced to be there,” one of them says. “We wanted to be there.”
