The film, co-written by Joon-Ho and Jon Ronson, follows the story of Mija, portrayed by Seohyum An, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful company from kidnapping her best friend – who happens to be a monster named Okja. The director had previously stated that the storyline captures the “warm friendship between a country girl and a brute with stories.”
“With ‘Okja’ I want to show the beauty that can exist between man and animal, and also the horror between them,” the “Snowpiercer” helmer said.
The English and Korean-language film has a diverse cast featuring Lily Collins, Steve Yeun, Devon Bostick, Byun Heebong, Shirley Henderson, Daniel Henshall, Yoon Je Moon and Choi Wooshik.
Filming will take place in the U.S., South Korea and Canada. Brad Pitt’s Plan B is on board to co-produce along with Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Lewis Taewan Kim, Dooho Choi, Woo-sik Seo and Joon-Ho.
