In a crowded entertainment landscape, it’s often difficult for certain films to get developed, let alone funded, especially if they’re considerably outside of the mainstream. Many directors and producers have turned to crowdfunding campaigns to raise the necessary cash in order to fulfill their creative desires without compromise. Well now, Augenblick Studios, the Brooklyn-based animation studio behind such beloved properties like “Wonder Showzen” and “Ugly Americans,” now needs the public’s help to finish their R-rated animated feature film “The Adventures of Drunky,” about a hapless barfly (Sam Rockwell) who has to travel through Heaven and Hell to save the girl (Nina Arianda) he loves and the world after God (Jeffrey Tambor) and the Devil (Steve Coogan) make a cosmic bet that destroys his life. Watch a trailer above with Tambor as God expanding on the campaign, the details of the production, and much more.
As the campaign website details, it’s difficult for R-rated animated features to get made because major animation studios don’t want to take the risk, preferring to bank on child-friendly animated features that traditionally do well. But Augenblick Studios believes that audiences want more variety, especially those who have grown up watching Adult Swim and “South Park,” and reading indie cartoons. In the trailer, director Aaron Augenblick explains that he “always wanted to make an animated feature film that felt like an underground comic” and that he thinks “movies like ‘Drunky’ will start a new wave of animated feature films” because “if more R-rated cartoons are successful, more will get made.”
