PETA always has their finger on the trigger when it comes to the myriad animal rights atrocities that occur every day, and they even look ahead into the future to best craft their message so it will reach the most people. Case in point: PETA’s newest commercial attacking SeaWorld will hit the airwaves in May just in time for the tourist season, and it features Lily Tomlin as she reprises her beloved Ernestine character from “Laugh-In” to aid in their fight.
In the spot penned by “Modern Family” scribe Alex Herschlag, Ernestine answers phone calls with cheeky one-liners that refer to SeaWorld’s controversial practice of keeping killer whales in captivity. Some of these include, “This is Ernestine returning your call from SeaWorld, where everybody has a whale of a time — except for the whales,” and “Yes, the orcas lose teeth gnawing on the concrete walls, but if you were a trainer, wouldn’t you be prefer to swim with a toothless killer whale?”
In recent years, SeaWorld has come under sharp scrutiny for their treatment of killer whales. The damning documentary “Blackfish” exclusively focuses on this issue, covering the capture of Tilikum, an orca that has been involved in the deaths of three individuals. After the strong backlash as a result of the documentary, SeaWorld announced that it would end killer-whale shows at the park and phase out its orca breeding program all together.
