Penelope Cruz’s new film “ma ma” follows Magda, an unemployed teacher who is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, she meets Arturo (Luis Tosar), a husband and father dealing with his own personal crisis. They bond over their respective traumas and form a makeshift family to help each other face adversity in whatever form it takes. Directed by Julio Medem (“Sex and Lucia,” “Lovers of the Arctic Circle”) and co-produced by Cruz, ‘ma ma’ follows in the high melodrama tradition of Pedro Almodóvar and Douglas Sirk as it tracks Magda’s emotional journey through strength and grace. It also stars Asier Etxeandia, Àlex Brendemühl, and Silvia Abascal. Watch the new U.S. trailer for “ma ma” above.
Penelope Cruz has garnered widespread critical acclaim for her roles in Cameron Crowe’s “Vanilla Sky,” Pedro Almodóvar’s “Volver,” Woody Allen’s “Vicky Christina Barcelona,” for which she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, and Rob Marshall’s “Nine,” for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
“ma ma” will open in New York on May 20th, in Los Angeles and Miami on May 27th, and with a national expansion to follow soon after.
