After a highly successful first season that culminated in a Golden Globe win for Best Television Series – Drama, “Mr. Robot” returns for its sophomore season this summer. Above you can see the new teaser, which released today by USA Network. Rami Malek stars as a cybersecurity engineer who gets recruited to join a merry band of hacktivists called fsociety by the eponymous anarchist (Christian Slater, who likewise won a Golden Globe).
Though vague, the 20-second teaser does consist entirely of new footage: Malek is at work on his computer, presumably in the process of bringing down this or that corrupt financial institution, when he hears a knock at the door. Wearing a hoodie, he turns around to reveal a black eye and a cut on his nose — as well as what looks to be the beginning of a smile. Then it cuts to black.
“Mr. Robot” was created by Sam Esmail, whose feature debut “Comet” went under the radar last year despite being an affecting romance situated somewhere between “Blue Valentine” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” Joining the cast of his show this season will be Craig Robinson, Joey Bada$$, Sandrine Holt, Michael Maize, Dorothi Fox and Luke Robertson. “Mr. Robot” returns on July 13.
