Sean Penn’s latest film “The Last Face” follows a budding romance between a director of an international aid organization (Charlize Theron) and a stubborn, impulsive relief doctor (Javier Bardem). Set against the backdrop of war-torn Liberia, the two engage in a passionate love affair, but despite their shared belief about the danger of civil unrest, the two find that they hold opposing views on how to best solve the conflict. “The Last Face” also stars Adèle Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”), Jean Reno (“Leon: The Professional”), and Jared Harris (“Mad Men”). The film is set to premiere in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Check out the first image from the film above.

“The Last Face” will be Sean Penn’s first feature film since 2007’s “Into The Wild,” which starred Emile Hirsch as Christopher McCandless, the real-life hiker and traveler who documented his trek into the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990’s. Penn has had two other films premiere at Cannes: His 1991 debut film “The Indian Runner,” which played the festival’s Directors’ Fortnight sidebar, and his 2001 film “The Pledge,” which premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or.
