Westerns never truly went away, but there sure does seem to be heightened activity coming from the genre lately. “The Hateful Eight” found Quentin Tarantino even deeper into that narrative territory than “Django Unchained,” “The Homesman” provided Hilary Swank with the best non-Oscar-winning role of her career and Ti West’s “In a Valley of Violence” is among the more anticipated genre films of the year. You can add “The Duel” to that list, a new oater starring Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. Watch its first trailer above.
As you can imagine, the two are fated go go mano-a-mano as only cowboys in the 1880s can. Hemsworth plays Texas Ranger David Kingston, whose duties take him to the frontier town of Helena. There, he’s told that he “needs to meet the Preacher.” That’d be Harrelson. Based on the available evidence, he doesn’t seem to be that holy.
Also in the cast are William Hurt, Emory Cohen and Alice Braga. Kieran Darcy-Smith directed “The Duel,” which Lionsgate Premiere will release theatrically on June 24.
