In advance of next Sunday’s hotly-anticipated season six premiere, “Game of Thrones” has gotten onboard with the 360-degree video trend. Now, for the first time ever, you can watch the show’s opening credits from every possible angle — look hard enough and you may even see all hope for a happy ending fade.
Well, maybe not. But there are probably some other Easter eggs to be found: confirmation of Gendry’s whereabouts? Evidence of #Cleganebowl existing beyond excitable viewers’ imaginations? A certain uncrowned queen and her loyal dragons? It speaks to the show’s transportive power that, despite how violent and upsetting it so often is, fans can’t help but be cautiously optimistic about their favorite characters’ fates. (Speaking of which, hoopleheads beware: Ian McShane of “Deadwood” fame is joining the cast this season.)
The immersive (and, depending on your inner ear, vertigo-inducing) video is the result of a partnership between HBO, Facebook, Oculus and Elastic, the studio who designed the original credits sequence. Whether you’re a bannerman for House Lannister, patiently waiting for the Starks to rise again or just want the White Walkers to burn down all of Westeros, your adoptive fictional homeland is well-represented here.
