“Everybody Wants Some!!” — Richard Linklater’s latest film — follows three days in the lives of a group of college baseball players in 1980 as they drink, dance, and flirt the time away before classes start. Billed as a spiritual sequel to Linklater’s 1993 film “Dazed and Confused,” “Everybody Wants Some!!” features a large ensemble cast of young, mostly fresh faces. Their natural on-screen chemistry is a direct product of Linklater’s storied collaborative approach with actors, and how he builds films from an intimate rehearsal process.
In an exclusive clip from AT&T’s Audience Network’s interview series “Off Camera With Sam Jones,” Richard Linklater discusses the challenges of working with guarded actors — those who “grow to protect [themselves] from being bad, so they’ll accept being, like, pretty good” — and why he strives to take his actors to new levels by trying to combine his own sensibility with theirs. It’s about finding new ideas not by acting like an authoritarian, but acting like a team member. He’s invested in discovering other people’s strengths and weaknesses so that he can build everyone up for the benefit of the film as a whole.
The Richard Linklater episode of “Off Camera With Sam Jones” airs tonight at 8pm ET on AT&T’s Audience Network.
