Watch: 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Trailer Introduces a New Rebel to Root For

The “Star Wars” galaxy is about to get a whole lot bigger, thanks to this year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the first film in the much-anticipated “anthology” series meant to fit in neatly alongside the first trilogy, the prequels and the current continuation of the beloved series, as vividly brought to life by J.J. Abrams in last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

This time around, formerly very indie director Gareth Edwards continues his ascent to blockbuster glory (after the success of his 2014 “Godzilla” revamp) with a story set between the original trilogy and the prequels during the so-called “Dark Times,” when Jedi were few and far between (thanks, Anakin). The plot revolves around the plucky group who stole the Death Star plans, an essential inciting event that helps drive much of the action in the original trilogy. It’s a story that’s actually ripe for the telling, as it involves an extremely well known incident in “Star Wars” lore that hasn’t previously been shown on the big screen.

The film features a strong cast, including Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and “Nightcrawler” stand out Riz Ahmed. Based on this first peek at the film, it sure looks like Jones is taking center stage as a rebel of a different kind.

Watch the first trailer above, which debuted on “Good Morning America” this morning, and get excited to return to a galaxy far, far away.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens on December 16.
