Released a week after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” you probably weren’t paying attention to Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg‘s “Daddy’s Home,” but Paramount‘s counter-programming comedy was a smart move by the studio. The film quietly amassed a staggering $150 million domestic, some career-best numbers for both actors, and it picked up an additional $90 million overseas. And now, the studio wants more.
Paramount has reupped Ferrell and Wahlberg for the sequel, along with screenwriters Sean Anders and John Morris, with Anders directing. There’s no word yet on the plot but **spoilers** the movie does end with John Cena riding in as the potential villain for Ferrell and Wahlberg to team up against in the battle for fatherly love. **end spoilers** And while I didn’t particularly care for the movie, I hope they bring back Thomas Haden Church, who was flat out the funniest thing about “Daddy’s Home.”
No word yet on when production might start, but let’s hope this Ferrell/Wahlberg sequel trend continues until they make a followup to “The Other Guys.” [Deadline]
