“Beauty and the Beast” is the latest Disney movie to get a live-action remake, with the success of “Alice in Wonderland,” “Cinderella” and “Maleficent” helping ensure that this ongoing trend is here to stay for at least a few more years. Ahead of its release next spring, the film has premiered its first trailer. Watch it above.
1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In the first teaser trailer for the new film, we get a big taste of the look and feel of Beast’s castle (opulent, but definitely home to some weird stuff) and a quick look at Watson as Belle, all while some of Beast’s compatriots chatter about whether Belle could be the one or not. It’s a quick look at the new property, but the tone is haunting without being too scary, and the castle itself looks remarkable.
Emma Watson plays Belle opposite Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey,” “The Guest”) as Beast, while Luke Evans plays Gaston. Also in the prodigious cast are Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, Ian McKellan as Cogsworth and Kevin Kline as Maurice.
Bill Condon is directing the film, which Disney will release on March 17, 2017.
