“Game of Thrones” has been at the center of many a piracy discussion over the last several years, having held the distinction of being the most torrented show on television since shortly after it first came on the air. Sunday’s emotional episode “The Door” was the latest to leak early, news that was first reported by TorrentFreak and later confirmed by HBO itself.
“This past Sunday’s episode was made available early on the HBO Nordic platform temporarily due to a technical issue, at which time it seems to have been copied,” an HBO spokesperson told Variety. “Upon learning of the incident, we used the available means to limit further access to the episode.” The episode leaked more than 24 hours in advance of its actual airing, first in low quality but later in high resolution. The company recently addressed this issue by doing what many had been asking for for years: creating the standalone HBO Now app, which allows viewers to legally watch its programming without a cable package.
Despite ongoing piracy concerns, “Game of Thrones” continues to be a ratings juggernaut. Last month’s season-six premiere drew 7.94 million viewers, while Sunday’s episode drew 7.89 million — the fourth-highest in “Thrones” history.
