With the Cannes Film Festival just two days away, hype and anticipation are at their usual fever pitch. Some of the more high-profile offerings remain shrouded in relative secrecy — Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” wasn’t included in the initial lineup announcement and has only released a brief synopsis and a few stills, for instance — while others are taking a more maximalist approach. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon” skews toward the latter end of the spectrum. Ahead of its first screening, the film has just released its trailer.
Elle Fanning stars as an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles and is treated to the attendant highs and lows of her cutthroat industry. Much of the footage in this new glimpse at the movie will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the first trailer, but it’s striking all the same: garish colors, luxe parties, a mountain lion that somehow ends up in a darkened hotel room. Alessandro Nivola, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone and Bella Heathcote all co-star.

“The Neon Demon” is Refn’s third consecutive film to premiere at Cannes: “Drive” won him the festival’s Best Director prize in 2013 and “Only God Forgives” was met with a considerably more mixed reaction two years later. Amazon Studios and Broad Green Pictures are releasing it stateside on June 24.
