Emma Roberts has emerged as one of the more nuanced actors of her generation in recent years, with roles in “Palo Alto” and “Adult World” showcasing her quietly impressive skills. She’ll soon be seen alongside Dave Franco in the considerably more high-profile “Nerve,” whose first trailer just dropped.
Roberts’ mild-mannered character is introduced watching videos of the eponymous game, an interactive experience in which “Watchers” demand that “Players” compete certain tasks for cash prizes. These range from the relatively harmless — “Kiss a stranger for five seconds ($100)” — to the increasingly out-there: “Leave the store” wearing a very expensive dress taken from the fitting room ($2,500). (Franco plays the stranger in question, and he’s first seen reading Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse.”)
Things eventually take a dangerous turn, as movie logic demands they must, with our heroine and her new beau in far over their heads. Juliette Lewis, Samira Wiley, Kimiko Glenn and Miles Heizer all co-star in “Nerve,” which is being released on July 27.
