The Pivot original series “Secret Lives of Americans,” explores the secrets ordinary Americans keep from the world, and why they choose to hide them. Over the course of each episode, participants confess and divulge their darkest secrets while self-documenting their own journey. These people have often been living a double life from their friends and family, and in order to achieve a better tomorrow with new opportunities, they must share their secrets and start living a more open, more honest life. These Americans are from all walks of life and come from vastly different experiences, but their courage and strength to shed light on the dark corners of their lives binds them together. This season on “Secret Lives of Americans,” the series explores many pertinent cultural issues as well as those that have been roundly ignored by the general public. Episodes from this season include the story of a Muslim woman who has been hiding her religion and culture since September 11, 2001, and is only now reflecting upon her choice in the light of current events. Another episode details the life of a mother who secretly never learned how to read, a reminder to people watching at home that illiteracy is still a serious issue in this country.

Pivot and Participant Media, the production company behind “Secret Lives of Americans,” are dedicated to creating original content devoted to social change and to offer tools and resources to continue the conversations introduced by the series. It’s their hope to raise awareness about these issues and how the people at home can get involved and give back to their own communities.
