“Super Troopers” first premiered at Sundance in early 2001, and for the last 15 years has been building its cult-movie bona fides as vocal fans endlessly quoted their favorite lines and demanded a sequel. That wish became a reality last year, when Broken Lizard launched a highly successful Indiegogo campaign to fund the next installment — asking for $2 million, the production ended up making more than twice that. Now, per co-writer/director/star Jay Chandrasekhar’s Twitter, the film has its first official poster.
The original film, released theatrically by Fox Searchlight in February of 2002, concerns five highly unprofessional state troopers in Vermont whose antics near the Canadian border inspire much laughter. Different ideas for a second “Super Troopers” have floated around for a decade, with Chandrasekhar mentioning the possibility of a prequel as early as the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con. The sequel that’s now being produced came with a caveat: Broken Lizard had to secure funding on their own.
