Hong-jin has quite a bit of success at the Cannes Film Festival in past years. His debut film “The Chaser,” about a former police detective-turned-pimp who relies on his old skills to stop an elusive serial killer preying on his prostitutes, premiered at a midnight special screening at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. His next film 2011’s “The Yellow Sea,” about a cash-strapped taxi driver tapped by a gangster to perform one hit job for a lot of money, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at that year’s festival. “The Wailing” is his first film since and it will premiere out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
