SundanceTV and ABC TV announced today that they have renewed Australian sci-fi drama “Cleverman” for a second season. The announcement coincides with the premiere of the show, which will air on June 1 and 2 in the United States and Australia respectively.
The first season of “Cleverman” was selected to screen at the 2016 Berlinale Film Festival and has been sold to BBC Three, among other channels. The first six-episode season stars Iain Glen, Frances O’Connor, Hunter Page-Lochard and Rob Collins, and follows an Aboriginal superhero who can see into the future and connect the spirit world to the human world.
“The Sapphires” director Wayne Blair and “The Secret Daughter” director Leah Purcell, who directed the first season, will return for Season 2, with creature design continuing to be provided by “Lord of the Rings” powerhouse effects studio Weta Workshop and Jacob Nash.
Season 2 will begin production in Sydney later this year. “It’s rare that you get the green light for a second series of a show before the first season has even gone to air, so for me it’s a testament to the quality and audience appeal of ‘Cleverman,’” Sally Riley, Head of Scripted Production at ABC TV, said in a statement. She continued, “It is also a testament to the unflinching support the show has from our funding partners Screen Australia and Screen NSW here in Oz, and our international partners Red Arrow and Sundance TV.”
