After being chosen as the Tribeca Film Festival’s opening-night selection and playing at LAFF just this week, Justin Tipping’s feature debut is headed to theaters this fall. “Kicks” stars Jahking Guillory as a 15-year-old whose dream of owning a new pair of sneakers is quickly dashed by an older kid who takes them for himself; his performance has been the focus of several positive reviews. “Sometimes I wish I had a spaceship,” Guillory says in the opening moments, “just hang out in space where it’s quiet and no one can mess with me.” He’s messed with quite often on the planet where he actually lives, however, with the kicks he’s wanted for so long only adding to his troubles.
Christopher Meyer, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Kofi Siriboe and Mahershala Ali all co-star in “Kicks,” which won the award for Best Cinematography at Tribeca. Focus World is releasing it in theaters on September 9.
