Director Tim Burton has long trafficked in stories about mysterious outsiders who have strange abilities that lead them to great (and often pretty scary) things, all in service to some major cinematic achievements. From “Edward Scissorhands” to “Frankenweenie” to “Big Fish” and everything in between, weird and imaginative stories and characters are Burton’s bag, and his latest offering, a big screen take on the popular YA “Miss Peregrine’s” series from author Ransom Riggs, fits that bill perfectly.
The story follows young Jake (Asa Butterfield) who discovers “clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, [and] he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine‘s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.” Butterfield is joined in the film by Eva Green (as Miss Peregrine herself), Samuel L. Jackson (as a baddie we meet in the latest trailer) and Ella Purnell as Jake’s apparently air-challenged love interest.

The latest trailer for the film is, appropriately enough, pretty weird, vacillating between all the wonder we’d expect from a YA-skewing series about kids with special abilities and a lingering sense of absolute horror that cannot be shaken. Take the kids, but be ready to cover their eyes.
“Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” opens on September 30. Check out the new trailer below. Spooky!
