Devoti Tutti

Logline: Saint Agatha of Catania was killed in 251 AD for resisting the advances of a Roman governor. Her story has always been told by men — until now.

Elevator Pitch:

13-year old Agatha was the Malala of 2000 years ago: She refused to submit to the tyranny of a patriarchal, repressive society. For refusing sex with the governor, her breasts were cut off. Her ‘NO’ resulted in torture and death. She was canonized and today the annual Feast of Saint Agatha attracts millions of visitors, who are passionate in their devotion to this courageous girl. Devoti Tutti tells Agatha’s story for the first time from a feminist point of view, using animation to bring her to life and unlocks the mystery of the hold she continues to have after 2000 years.

Production Team:

Director: Bernadette Wegenstein (“The Good Breast,” “See You Soon Again”)
Editor: Victor Livingston (“The Good Breast,” “Queen of Versailles”)
Cinematographer: Allen Moore (“The Good Breast,” “Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts,” “Baseball”)
Animator: Adriana Copete
Producer: Elizabeth Karr (“The Good Breast,” “Radio Free Albemuth”)
Producer: Rebecca Messner (“The Good Breast,” “Olmsted and America’s Urban Parks”)
Producer: Thomas Bogner
Producer: Jon Reiss (“The Good Breast,” “Bomb It”)

About the Film:

“Devoti Tutti” is our follow-up documentary to The Good Breast, which premiered at Bentonville FilmFestival. When director Bernadette Wegenstein and crew traveled to Catania for the Feast of St. Agatha (patron saint of breast diseases) we realized Agatha’s story needs to be told. We all fell under Agatha’s spell– this brave girl who said NO–and want to introduce her to young audiences. Agatha is the ‘Beyonce’ of saints–her devotees are fanatically passionate. But her story has always been told by men. Stripping away 2000 years of patriarchy, we are giving Agatha her own voice, using animation and a woman’s POV.

Current Status: Finished final week of shooting in Italy June 28. Now entering post-production: completing animation and editing.
